As First Lady, she made it her project to beautify the White House grounds once more by updating the gardens that had long been dismissed. Here, she utilized the vibrant blue cornflower to add a fresh pop of color. The cornflower represented unity, devotion, and hope and was the right message to have in the gardens of the White House. During her time as First Lady, she spearheaded many projects, including the Highway Beautification Act, which called for planting flowers along highways in cities across the U.S. She also was the founder of the National Wildlife Research Center in Houston in 1982. Her favorite flower, the Lavender Bluebell, is a beautiful and colorful flower that symbolizes gratitude, undying love, humility, and devotion.
